  • Are psychiatric medications addictive?
    NO. Psychiatric medications, when taken as per the direction of a qualified psychiatrist, are not addictive. A few classes of drugs (e.g. Benzodiazepine) do have the risk of being abused or leading to addictions if taken without supervision. Therefore, always seek help from a qualified psychiatrist for appropriate direction of use.
  • Are psychiatric disorders life threatening?
    Yes. Psychiatric disorders, if not treated in time or if not treated adequately, may cause mortality and reduced life expectancy. However, timely and adequate management of the disorders can help reduce the mortality rate and significantly improve prognosis. Therefore, it is always advisable to seek consultation from a qualified psychiatrist at the earliest.
  • Are psychiatric disorders curable?
    While a few psychiatric disorders are not curable, almost all psychiatric disorders can be controlled using medications. Timely treatment in adequate doses and for adequate durations helps to improve the outcome significantly. Therefore, it is advisable to follow the treatment plan devised by the psychiatrist along with the patient/relative for good outcomes.
  • Can I alter the doses of my medications by myself or for my loved ones?
    NO. This is not advisable. It is always wise to discuss your queries with your psychiatrist who will make the necessary changes if required so as to ensure the wellbeing of the patient.
  • I/my loved one feels like committing suicide. What should we do?
    Please confide in your loved ones. Ensure you do not leave the patient alone. Contact the nearest psychiatrist, hospital or emergency room for assistance.
