Autism

Autism refers to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties in social communication, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests. Autism presents differently in each individual, ranging from mild to severe, and is often identified in early childhood.

A psychiatrist plays a crucial role in early diagnosis, therapy, and management of autism, especially when it coexists with other conditions such as anxiety, ADHD, or sensory processing issues.

Signs and Symptoms of Autism:

1. Social Communication Challenges

  • Difficulty in understanding social cues (like facial expressions or tone of voice)
  • Limited eye contact or facial expressions
  • Trouble forming and maintaining friendships
  • Delayed speech and language development
  • Preference for solitary play or activities

2. Repetitive Behaviors and Restricted Interests

  • Repetitive movements (e.g., hand-flapping, rocking)

  • Sensory sensitivities (overreaction to sound, touch, light, or smell)

3. Cognitive and Emotional Differences

  • Exceptional skills in specific areas (e.g., math, music, art) in some cases
